Symptoms & Treatments

Often times, people experience symptoms of dental problems but don’t realize that they may be caused by a treatable dental condition. Here are some frequently described symptoms:

My Gums Bleed or Are Sore When I Brush Them

Gums that bleed or that are sore may be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease affects about 75% of American adults according to a survey by The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Periodontics deals with the treatment of gum disease and the factors that contribute to gum disease. Dr. Petkevis will perform a comprehensive examination to determine if you have gum disease and then recommend treatment options including laser dentistry.

My Teeth Are Crooked, Overlapping or Have Gaps Between Them

Not many people have a “perfect” smile. There are many options for making your teeth straighter. Orthodontics focuses on straightening teeth. You may need metal braces to help realign your teeth. Or, you may simply need mild or moderate orthodontic care and seek treatment using the Invisalign system. Invisalign uses clear – virtually invisible – aligners that gently shift your teeth into their desired position.

I Have Old Metal Fillings That Are Unattractive and Uncomfortable

Many patients have older amalgam (silver) fillings which may be uncomfortable, unattractive and may be loose or falling out. Once the standard in modern dentistry, metal fillings have been replaced by composite resin fillings. These “white fillings” are more attractive and durable, blending with the tooth for a virtually invisible appearance. Larger cavities may be treated with porcelain dental inlays or onlays which cover the biting surface of the tooth. Teeth that are significantly weak and at risk of breaking may be treated with dental crowns which cover the entire tooth, restoring its strength and beauty.

My Teeth are Dark, Stained or Discolored

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested procedures in cosmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening is one of the fastest, safest and most affordable ways to enhance your smile. Dr. Petkevis offers both in office and at home teeth whitening so you can decide what fits best with your schedule and budget.

My Jaw Makes a Popping or Clicking Noise

A popping or clicking noise in the jaw joint (TMJ) is often caused by instability with the occlusion (bite). A comprehensive examination will be conducted to determine if you do indeed have an unstable bite. Depending on your specific condition, Dr. Petkevis will recommend a variety of treatment options including TMJ Therapy to correct the disfunction and repair any damage that may have been caused.

I am Missing Teeth, Broken or Damaged Teeth

There are a number of reasons people have missing teeth. Accidents and physical trauma are common reasons, but also periodontal disease, tooth decay and hereditary factors contribute to missing teeth. There are several excellent options for replacing missing teeth depending on your condition, age and lifestyle. Dental Crowns are a conservative method used to preserve natural teeth that may be weakened or broken. Dental Bridges are used to replace several missing teeth. Dentures and Partial Dentures are used to replace all of the upper and/or lower teeth. Dental Implants require a significant investment, but provide a permanent solution for tooth loss. Dental implants may be used to replace a single tooth or used in combination with dental bridges, dentures or partial dentures.

My Teeth Have Jagged, Chipped or Rough Edges

Teeth that are worn or rough along the edges is a sign that you may have an unstable bite is teeth. Dr. Petkevis will conduct a comprehensive examination, to identify signs of instability in the teeth, jaw joints (TMJ), muscles and bones. Any instability can be treated and corrected and teeth can be repaired using a variety of methods including dental crowns, inlays or onlays and porcelain veneers.

I Experience Headaches or Migraines

It is possible that your headaches or migraines may be caused by or worsened by an unstable occlusion (bite). Dr. Petkevis will complete a comprehensive examination to determine the balance and stability of your bite and create a personalized treatment plan to correct any instability. You may have problems with the jaw joints (TMJ) and require TMJ Therapy.
